Canada offers to assist Nigeria overcome Boko Haram
The Canadian government on Wednesday in
Calabar, South-South Nigeria, offered to assist the
country in its fight against Boko Haram
insurgency.
Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Perry
Calderwood, made the pledge during a press
conference held in Calabar.
Calderwood said that his government would train
the Nigerian military on new techniques in
countering terrorism, adding that Canada would
support Nigeria to ensure that it is safe for
investors.
Calderwood said the government of his country is
investigating the activities of the Boko Haram sect,
and is prepared to share information with Nigeria
in order to stop the destructive activities of the
sect.
The High Commissioner said all over the world
terrorism is abhorred, so the international
community is determined to put a halt to it.
He said if the federal government can deal with the
remote and immediate motives of the terrorist
group, insurgency in the north eastern part of
Nigeria would be permanently solved.
Calderwood, who was in Calabar for the
commissioning of projects executed by his
country, described the relationship between
Nigeria and Canada as being very cordial.
"Nigeria and Canada have a wide-range, dynamic
relationship dating back to the 60s when Canadian
teachers came to teach in Nigeria," Calderwood
said.
He said the Canadian government has expended
well over N3 billion in the primary health sector in
both Cross River and Bauchi States.
The High Commissioner said his government spent
about N1.5 billion on various projects in the state,
particularly on the state College of Health
Technology in Calabar.
